For the preparation of his total of eight Spanish Dances (HN 1370) Sarasate used already existing material - folk tunes or songs of well-known authors - which he associated with his own charming tone language. Playera and Zapateado Op. 23, the third edition of the Spanish Dances as No. 5 and No. 6, were written in the summer of 1879. Zapateado is a breathtaking, highly virtuoso dance in which the violin can unfold all its technical possibilities. The work quickly became one of Sarasate's most successful performance pieces as a violinist. Since then, the piece, which is now available as a single edition in the Henle program, has lost none of its charm and enjoys great popularity.
