When Jacob HOHNER filed his patent for the Marine Band harmonica on January 30th, 1896, in New York, no one could have predicted the instrument’s profound impact on the future of music. Created as a folk instrument, the Marine Band has influenced blues, folk, rock, and pop music.
By the early 20th century, Marine Band harmonicas were being exported in large numbers to the United States. There, they were embraced by African American musicians, who developed new playing techniques that led to fresh forms of musical expression. From their work songs emerged the music we now call the blues. The Marine Band harmonica has been a defining sound on nearly every recording by blues legends such as Little Walter Jacobs, Sonny Boy Williamson I & II, Big Walter Horton, Sonny Terry, Jimmy Reed, and Big Mama Thornton.
While the Marine Band harmonica was instrumental in the evolution of blues, it wasn’t limited to this genre. It also became the preferred harmonica for artists like Johnny Cash, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan. As a true “people’s instrument,” the Marine Band was played in every imaginable setting, from back porches and street corners to concert halls.
This compact instrument still shapes how most people perceive the harmonica today. Each Marine Band harmonica is crafted in Germany with the same dedication and precision that made it an icon.
