Among the variations on its own theme, the WoO 80, written in 1806, is a special case insofar as Beethoven consciously draws on older techniques. A chromatically descending bass in the theme forms the foundation of the changes. His ostinatohafte repetition gives the composition the features of a Passacaglia. The revised score text of the Urtext edition with detailed preface and commentary section was created on the basis of the Critical Report of the Complete Edition of Beethoven and is published as a single edition from "Variations for Piano II" (HN 1269).
