Yamaha's professional model background brass are world-renown for their blend of traditional warm, rich sound, combined with highly accurate intonation and easy playability. Developed in close cooperation with top artists, they represent the state-of-the-art in brass instrument design and manufacture, and are ideal for either solo performance or providing a secure foundation for any ensemble. The YEP-642 has created a new standard in the art of euphonium. It has become the instrument of choice for leading musicians, and broadens their musical possibilities with its expansive sound and rich palette of tonal colors.

This Euphonium model, along with the YEP-842S Custom Euphonium also from Yamaha are in my opinion the absolute finest of Euphoniums available. Are you sick of those awfully sharp high F's, F#'s and G's and you have to push down the 4th valve to get them in tune, then split the note? I was, and that's why a got the brass band I play in to buy one of these for me (heh) and my problems have been solved at long last. Some other manufacturers have settled in their euhponium designs to solve the upstairs intonation problems with another trigger that moves the tuning slide out. Yamaha didn't settle for this, they went back to the drawing board, re-vamped the design, and just simply made the instrument in tune. Good thinking.

This accurate tuning featured exclusively on the Yamaha compensating euphoniums is just one of many of the improvements that make the instruments great. A thicker bell material gives the YEP-642S a round mellow sound that is quite dark- a trait desired by euphonium players, and a trait that is not typically Yamaha. Another stand out feature of how these instruments blow, is the effortless low register (for a compensating system) and easy high register. The YEP-642S also blow with an even resistance all through the instruments range. Chromatic slurring is an absolute breeze, it's as clean as if you were tounging every note, the notes just 'pop' into place. Lovely horn, among the best brass instruments ever built. -DW
