Immediately after his second Violin Sonata op. 108 Faure began in the spring of 1917 a sonata for cello and piano in attack and thus realized a long-cherished plan. Both plans are very closely linked in terms of investment and gesture. In the Cello Sonata, too, a darkly dramatic opening movement is followed by a calm-relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The echo of the first performances remained subdued, but thanks to the increasing interest in the entire late chamber music Faure, this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a significant part of his work. With the Henle Urtext edition, the first critical edition of the work is now available. For the designation of the cello part a master of his field, David Geringas, could be won.
